The second line on ‘Arch Bridge’ to reduce the traffic between Chennai and Kolkata is yet to start, even South Central Railway (SCR) had agreed in this regard way back. Space is left for the second track.
In 2015, the then SCR BZA divisional manager Ashok Kumar said that laying of second track will be taken up shortly. But so far, no progress.
SCR is using road-cum-rail bridge for the trains going towards Vijayawada and including goods trains. Arch bridge is used for the trains, including goods trains, moving towards Visakhapatnam. But, they are allowing passengers on both sides from the arch bridge.
The bridge is having 28 spans with a distance of 16 metres between them. The present track was laid in a width of 8 metre and 8 metre space was left for laying second track.
Presently, about 150 express, passenger and goods trains are moving from the city every day, excluding weekly express trains. It is not yet clear when the works relating to second track will begin.
